About Our Program
Take Flight: A Comprehensive Intervention for Students with Dyslexia method developed by Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children is a comprehensive Tier III intervention for students with dyslexia. Take Flight teaches structured language which is multisensory (visual, auditory, kinesthetic), systematic (logical order), cumulative (builds on previous learning) and explicit (direct). It’s an approach that focuses on phonological awareness, phonics and decoding, spelling, vocabulary development, comprehension skills, and written expression.
Take Flight is designed specifically for individuals who have language-based learning differences (dyslexia). However, Take Flight has also proven successful for children needing basic instruction and/or as language enrichment. Take Flight is designed to enable students to achieve and maintain better word recognition, reading fluency, reading comprehension.
The report of the National Reading Panel identified research-proven components of effective reading instruction to be phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and reading comprehension. Take Flight was designed using the scientific evidence that supports the importance of each of these five components:
• Phonemic awareness Students are explicitly taught that our spoken language is made up of words and those words are made of individual sounds called phonemes.
• Phonics are provided in an organized approach by correlating sounds with letters or group of letters.
• Vocabulary is expanded and enriched by developing the ability to use the smallest units of meaning in English, word relationships, and figurative language by direct instruction and in the context of reading.
• Fluency instruction incorporates guided and timed repeated reading of decodable words, phrases and connected text.
• Reading comprehension Students are explicitly taught multiple comprehension strategies. These strategies include cooperative learning, comprehension monitoring, question generation, story structure, summarizing and inferencing. Students also learn how to utilize graphic organizers when reading narrative and expository texts.
Pre-flight is a 36-lesson multisensory program designed for younger, struggling students. It provides direct instruction in letter and alphabet knowledge, phonological awareness, and listening comprehension. Pre-Flight is not intended to be used in place of a comprehensive intervention for students identified with dyslexia.
